Thursday May 26, 2016
In the second installment of our look into cinema south of the border, we head to sunny Mexico! One of the most recognizable (and recognizably insane) subgenres of cinema is that of the luchador: featuring well known masked wrestlers facing off against mummies, mad scientists, zombies, vampires, sinister dwarves and more! Often paired with other notables (and rivals in the ring), tonight we talk the surprisingly lengthy film career of the legendary Enmascarado de Plata (Man in the Silver Mask) El Santo, his longtime foe (but cinema bestie!) Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras, Superzan, Tinieblas and more! Week 37 Mexican Horror pt. 1 - Lucha Libre contra Los Monstruos

As promised, we're picking up the pieces and gathering up the bits we never got to due to the inevitable ticking of the clock. This week, we take on the second director intended for our American Gothic show! College professor and documentarian Tobe Hooper seemed to come out of left field with his gruesome (yet strangely bloodless) take on the Ed Gein murders, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Parlaying the film's unprecedented success into a career in oddball horror, he would give us strange but often effective chillers like Eaten Alive, Salem's Lot, The Funhouse and Lifeforce, not to mention the strangely mainstream CG-fest Poltergeist! Join us tonight as we dive into the spotty but often quite fascinating career of another leading light in American horror, Tobe Hooper! Week 36 American Gothic pt. 2: Tobe Hooper

Without parallel, the single most influential and beloved British cult television series this side of Doctor Who was the quirky, often campy take on the 60's spy genre was Sydney Newman's (and later Brian Clemens') Avengers. Starting life at the very dawn of the 1960s as a gritty, nigh-street level crime series (with covert government involvement), Patrick MacNee's iconic British Intelligence man John Steed cycled through a succession of civilian partnerships, moving from a suave yet icily cold blooded black ops type to a far warmer, even goofily campy father figure throughout the series' long run. Join us as we work our way through the Dr. Keel and Venus Smith era to the outstanding Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman) and Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) eras, to the more questionable Tara King (Linda Thorson) and New Avengers (with Gareth Hunt and Joanna Lumley) runs, as we bring a touch of class to our usual espionage... Weird Scenes 5/5/16: Cinema South of the Border- Coffin Joe, Isabel Sarli & more

This week, we go south of the border to sunny South America! A true pioneer in outsider cinema, Jose Mojica Marins fought both poverty and governmental censure to create and release his homegrown cinema of philosophical and literal transgression, using throwaway celluloid short ends and scratching "special effects" directly on the emulsion to bring his uniquely Nietzchean anticlerical Xe do Caixao (better known on these shores as Coffin Joe) and faux-messianic madman Finis Hominis to an outraged (but fascinated) citizenry! Allegedly (re)discovered by and granted his English language moniker by none other than Something Weird impresario Mike Vraney, their VHS reissues of these forgotten early 60's-mid 70's pieces of art maudit brought what had been an exclusively South American boogeyman (complete with a series of horror comics hosted by and featuring him) to a somewhat controversial international attention! We'll also be moving further south to chat about free spirited zaftig Argentinian hot tamale Isabel Sarli and her enabler Armando Bo (Fuego), and the quirky sex-horror of Emilio Vieyra (Feast of Flesh/The Deadly Organ, Blood of the Virgins, Curious Dr. Humpp)! It's a party down South of the Border, only here on Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine! Week 34 Cinema South of the Border - Coffin Joe, Emilio Vieyra and Isabel Sarli
