Formed way back in the days of silent film, two of the four Shaw brothers (Run Run and Runme to be precise) turned an unspectacular business concern into the greatest of all Asian action film companies! Rivaled only much later (and to a far lesser degree) by Raymond Chow's Golden Harvest, Shaw productions were known for their revolving casts, stunning sets and costumerie and over the top mixtures of myth, fantasy and horror with some fairly grounded martial arts technique, with both barehanded and exotic weapons fighting coming into play! From core directors like horror experts Ho Meng Hua, Chih-Hung Kuei and the gothic-leaning swordplay of Chor Yuen, we'll proceed to the true masters of the genre, graceful fight coordinator cum director Lau Kar-Leung and the incomparable father of heroic bloodshed, Chang Cheh! Join us as we talk everything from Wang Yu and David Chiang to Ti Lung and the Venoms, only here on Weird Scenes! Week 26 Flying Fists and Shining Swords - speaking of Shaw Bros.

Starting life as a low end distributor of Joe Sarno's Swedish-era softcore epics, the advent of Menachem Golan and Yoram Globus elevated Cannon films to the top tier of cult cinema, specifically in terms of action films! From early slasher films, Luigi Cozzi oddities and breakdance films to a nigh-exclusive hold on the ninja film craze of the 80's, Cannon took action heroes like Chuck Norris, Charles Bronson and even Michael Dudikoff and drove them to new heights (or lows, depending on how you look at it) of explosive action cheese, garnering both po-faced and tongue in cheek accolades from generations of fans in the process! Join us as we talk one of the most consistently crazed and entertaining film production companies in exploitation, the legendary Cannon films! Week 25 Lights! Camera! and a whole lot of Action!

From its roots in the chapterplay serials of the 1930's and 40's, the superhero comic book made a short lived but still notable mark on the airwaves of the mid to late 1970's, with everything from The Secrets of Isis and Wonder Woman to the early Marvel productions like Spiderman, Doctor Strange and the odd success of the Incredible Hulk. After a decades long hiatus, with a notable blip or two along the way (The 1990 Flash, Lois & Clark, Smallville), the superhero has returned to television with a vengeance. Join us as we talk the history and current favorites like Constantine, Arrow, The (modern day) Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and even iZombie! Week 24 Look! Who would ever have imagined that a turn of the century British mystery writer would prove so influential in postwar Germany? And yet, the surprisingly prolific German krimi became the staple of Teutonic cinema throughout the 1960's, with colorful, serial-inflected comic book style Edgar, Bryan Edgar and faux-Wallaces comprising what seemed to be the entire filmic output of the central European nation for over a decade! Tag in the similar if related Dr. Mabuse, and that pretty much covers it... So join us as we talk Harald Reinl, Alfred Vohrer, Eddi Arendt, Joachim Fuchsberger, Heinz Drache, Klaus Kinski and Karin Dor, plus the more sedate British B-feature variant series, only here on Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine!
